About Uganda
Uganda
is a fertile land, straddling the equator, reaching
her arms out to embrace both East and Central Africa.
This is a country blessed with beauty and dramatic diversity,
numerous cultures living together harmoniously and an
abundance of wildlife that reflects this country's varied
habitats: rainforest, savanna, wetlands, glacier capped
mountains and meandering river valleys. Sharing borders
with Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Congo and Sudan, Uganda
is geographically positioned as a cross section of East
and Central Africa. It is a land of legend and ancient
lore, a treasure offering adventure, spectacular scenery,
inviting people and unforgettable memories.
Lake
Victoria, the second largest lake in the world, nourishes
the land and is the source of the great Nile River,
which crosses the length of the country like a shimmering
ribbon, home to pods of hippos, crocodiles, the banks
and reeds home to hundreds of brightly coloured birds:
Kingfishers, Bee-Eaters, Herons, Storks and the rare
and spectacular Shoebill.
The Albertine Rift - the western portion of the Great
Rift Valley which dominates Uganda's western border
- is unrivalled in Africa for its species richness,
and ranks as one of the utmost conservation priorities
in the world. This is also the land of the brooding,
mist-shrouded and snow-capped Mountains of the Moon
or Rwenzori Mountains. No other country in Africa can
match this amazing diversity of habitats.
